Strange Maps

I found this image of a Carte de Tendre:

It is taken from the website Strangemaps.wordpress which I think would be of some interest in general to the class given our readings, but also be of particular interest to Leona and Shane.
Also, recently I came across this site on one of my electronic derives: buildingblog
which would be of interest to everyone as it seems to keep close tabs on a broad scope of architectural themes . . . worth checking out I think.

Stolen Skittles

While taking a little break from the Rome Tre
presentations, Shane and I decided to sit at the
forum and read/sketch when we noticed strange
little colourful indents
... strangely resembling an
m&m cookie...
Interesting how we are still discover new things
about Rome on a daily basis, isn't it?

United Colors of Ireland

On my most recent adventures in the west of Ireland I started paying attention to the color people paint the exterior of their houses (cause shane was mumbling something about it t last time around). The winters in this part of the country can be long, windy, grey and wet, and sometimes the summers aren't much better. I always enjoy the contrast of the plentiful green vegetation against the bright colors of these buildings. These two houses are located on two different points on either side of a bay (spanish point beach bay). The colors alone are interesting but i wonder if the owners intended for there houses to become a landmark visible for several miles on land and sea.

Fab Prefab

I was thinking of this site specifically with relation to Christina's thesis, but it also relates to what we were discussing today about post-fordism and mass-customization.

http://www.fabprefab.com/

It tracks and describes trends in modernist prefabricated housing.

PlaceLab at MIT

I ran across a reference to this project last night. This apartment is outfitted with hundreds of sensors that actively monitor what is going on in the space. A central processor then adjusts the environment to suit what is going on. Interesting and frightening.

Modernist Mausoleums on San Michele

Especially for those who weren't able to make it out to San Michele I thought that I would post some photos. I was particularly fascinated by these modernist mausoleums. They contrast directly with my experience of mausoleums in Canada that usually seem to resemble either beaux-arts bureaucratic buildings or british telephone booths. . . . some really seemed fascist, others seemed of that post-fascist style of the 50's and 60's, including echos of Carlos Scarpa.

Some more pictures from Le Giudecca

Here are some pics that I took at the Giudecca
